Baksh advises stakeholders to prepare for rainy season

In Region Two…
CHAIRMAN of Region Two (Pomeroon/Supenaam), Mr. Alli Baksh said, Wednesday, he has been informed, by the Ministry of Agriculture, that the current El Nino weather pattern is expected to change within another three weeks.

Addressing overseers and other officials of the Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDCs) and Anna Regina Town Council, in the Regional Boardroom, he advised that the Regional Administration should start preparing for the anticipated heavy, consistent rainfall or La Nina period.
Baksh also said a two-day meeting will be convened in Georgetown, this weekend, to look at preparations nationally for the upcoming rainy season.
According to him, some farmers in Region Two are currently harvesting paddy while others are still irrigating their fields with water to sustain their crops.
Baksh said it is likely that the rainfall will have a serious effect on cultivations which would be ready for reaping during April/May.
He called on the assembled functionaries to make certain that all drainage trenches are clear of any garbage blockage.
Baksh said he will meet with all stakeholders in the Drainage and Irrigation (D&I) Department next week to look at how the Region is preparing for the weather change.
Meanwhile, some cash crop growers told the Guyana Chronicle they are eagerly looking forward to the coming rain to restart cultivation of farms and kitchen gardens.
