Guyanese, Nigerians nabbed in Essequibo drug bust remanded

A GUYANESE and two Nigerians, nabbed in a ‘Cinderella County’ drug bust, were yesterday remanded to prison on a joint charge.

Gavin Marks, 45, of Queenstown Village, Essequibo Coast, 31-year-old Victor Ozokwe and Udoye Emeka, 35, appeared before Magistrate Hazel Octave-Hamilton and they all pleaded not guilty to having four kilogrammes 750 grammes of cocaine, on March 20, for the purpose of trafficking.
Attorney-at-law Mr. Roger Yearwood, for Marks, requested bail for the defendant, stating that he is a taxi driver and was hired by the other two defendants to transport them.
The lawyer said, after Marks was arrested, he took the Police to where he had put off the other two defendants but had no knowledge of the illegal substance found.
Ms. Sasha Roberts, for Ozokwe and Emeka, said the duo reside in Suriname and were passing through Guyana.
But Police Inspector Joel Ricknauth, prosecuting, who successfully objected to bail for any of them, said the trio drove away from Police who tried to stop them and they will have to make their next appearance at Suddie Court.
The defendants also appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson on different  charges.
Marks pleaded not guilty to failing to stop on March 20 when directed to do so by a Police Constable and was ordered to post $50,000 surety until the case is called, again, at Suddie Court on April 29.
Ozokwe and Emeka pleaded guilty to having, on March 20, entered Guyana illegally by road and failed to present themselves to an immigration officer.
They were each fined $30,000 with the alternative of three months imprisonment.
