First Test in Wellington…

Aussies edge towards victory
after Bollinger’s five for 28
FAST bowler Doug Bollinger played the starring role for Australia as they continued to dominate the first Test against New Zealand on day three in Wellington
The 28-year-old left-armer claimed Test-best figures of five for 28 as New Zealand were skittled for 157 in reply to Australia’s 459 for five declared.

When Ricky Ponting enforced the follow-on, Bollinger added another two scalps to end the day with match figures of seven for 58.
New Zealand still require another 115 runs to avoid an innings defeat after reaching 187 for five when bad light ended play four overs early.
The bright spot of the second innings was a half-century for opener Tim McIntosh, who hit 10 boundaries and a six in his patient and much-needed 220-ball 83.
He appeared set for a second Test century until he got a fine edge to Simon Katich off Nathan Hauritz shortly before the close.
Daniel Vettori will resume on 18 on day four with Brendon McCullum (four) alongside him, and the pair will need to stick around if New Zealand are to salvage anything from the Test.
It took just 62 minutes and 12.1 overs for the Australian bowlers to wrap up New Zealand’s first innings as the batsmen continued to self destruct when they resumed on 108 for four at the Basin Reserve.
Vettori added four runs to his overnight total of 42 before being dismissed to the fifth ball of the day – Ryan Harris getting him to edge to Ponting in the slips.
McCullum survived a good lbw shout after calling for the player review which showed Ryan Harris (two for 42) had overstepped.
McCullum had not got off the mark by that point and made just 24 before Harris caught him off the bowling of Bollinger.
It was the first of two wickets in the over for the left-arm quick who got Guptill (30) to edge one behind to Haddin two deliveries later.
Daryl Tuffey (six-ball duck) then showed poor judgment when he failed to ground the bat trying to take what looked like a comfortable single and was out to a direct hit by Hauritz.
Debutant Brent Arnel (duck) was next to go in the over to give Bollinger his second Test five-wicket bag before Mitchell Johnson wrapped things up with the wicket of Tim Southee.
Southee slashed wildly at the delivery and failed to get Ian Gould’s decision overturned with a player review, despite replays showing he did not appear to get bat on ball.
Bollinger carried on where he left off in the first innings to snare the early wickets in New Zealand’s second innings as well, getting BJ Watling trapped leg before wicket for the second time in the match.
Watling (33) had at least got some runs on the board the second time round as he and Tim McIntosh put on 70 for the first wicket – a far cry from the 43 for four New Zealand struggled to in their opening dig.
But Bollinger struck again to leave them at 78 for two when he got Peter Ingram (one) to edge behind to Brad Haddin for his seventh scalp of the match.
McIntosh and Ross Taylor steered the side to 87 for two by tea but in the final session Taylor (25) was undone by a Hauritz delivery that turned sharply and the right-hander was rapped on the pads and given out after Australia called for a review.
New Zealand trailed by 187 runs at that stage but McIntosh ploughed on to make his fourth Test fifty – the first in the match for the Black Caps.
He and Guptill, who made a painstaking six off 36 balls, chipped another 21 runs off the chase before Vettori entered the fray with Guptill’s dismissal at 136 for four.
The opener and his captain frustrated the Australian bowlers for 10.5 overs and put on 47 runs before Hauritz enticed the edge to Katich late in the day, leaving Vettori and McCullum to negotiate the final few overs. (Eurosport)
