THE Special Events Committee of the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) last Thursday honoured two outstanding members of the Berbice Under-15 Team who won the recently held Inter-County tournament. Skipper of the team, Shawn Pereira, received a bicycle valued $16 000 after being named the County’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) while his deputy Gudakesh Motie-Kanhai received a New GPC hamper for his outstanding performance in the crucial last-round fixture versus Demerara which allowed Berbice to be crowned champions.
Special Events Committee Chairman Hilbert Foster stated that the BCB has a policy that every time the county won a tournament, a MVP would be named and would receive a bicycle.
He noted that the incentive was a motivation for the players to strive for excellence and disclosed that the selection of the MVP was done solely by the team’s management based on not only performances on the cricket field, but also on personal discipline, attitude, hygiene, commitment and ability to inspire teammates.
Foster noted that the BCB strongly believed that personal character was an important and natural talent and he challenged all young Berbician cricketers to develop “the theme of discipline and commitment”.
Coach of the successful team, Julian Moore, who at 24 years old was one of the youngest coaches to coach a Berbice Team at the Inter-county level, praised the BCB for its investment in youth development and for working hard to lift the standard of the game.
He disclosed that the Berbice Under-15 team was successful due to team unity, discipline, proper planning and a strong desire to win the title and stated that Pereira was selected the MVP because of his outstanding performances as captain, his inspiration to his fellow players and his performances as a batsman, bowler and fielder.
President and Treasurer of the BCB Keith Foster and Anil Beharry hailed the achievements of Motie-Kanhai and Pereira and challenged them to work harder to achieve more.
Faizal Jafferally of NCN, who sponsored the BCB Under-15 Inter-Zone cricket competition prior to the GCB Inter-county tournament, offered congratulations to the team and stated that NCN was delighted to assist in the preparation of the team.
The Berbice Cricket Board would like to express gratitude to NCN and Tenelec Inc. of Washington DC, USA for their sponsorship of Under-15 cricket in Berbice over the past year.
