St Lucia crush USVI to reach next round
ST JOHN’S, Antigua CMC – St Lucia romped to a emphatic 7-0 win over the US Virgin Islands on Friday to advance to the next round of the Caribbean Football Union Women’s World Cup qualifying series.
A hat-trick each from Vanessa Jean and Verdan Frederick spurred the
St Lucians to their second straight win in Group C of the three-team competition at the Antigua Recreation Ground.
They had come from behind to defeat hosts Antigua and Barbuda 2-1 in their opening match on Wednesday.
After Joanne Alphonse opened the floodgates in the eighth minute, Jean, who also scored in the first game, and Frederick proceeded to dominate relatively easy opposition.
Jean netted in the 27th and 33rd minutes to make it 3-0 at half-time before Frederick added a fourth a minute after the break.
Both players scored again within the space of a minute to give the St Lucians a 6-0 cushion by the 61st minute and Frederick completed the rout in the 86th minute.
The US Virgin Islands and Antigua and Barbuda will meet in the last game of the Group C round today.
