Man shot by Police while resisting arrest

HEMANT Balo is in police custody following a confrontation with the policeman who went to arrest him at his house on Monday.

Police reported that, at about 14:30 hrs on Monday last, Raywattie called ‘Babita’, 36, of Hampshire Squatting Area, Corentyne, Berbice, reported to the police at Albion Police Station that Hemant Balo, 38, also of Hampshire Squatting area, with whom she shared a previous relationship, had entered her premises armed with a cutlass and threatened to kill her.

She had managed to escape by jumping through a window of her home.

However, on receipt of the report, an armed Police Constable went to the scene where he met Balo in his yard with the cutlass in his hand.

The rank informed him of the report made against him whereupon Balo began to abuse the policeman and advanced towards the rank in a menacing manner with the cutlass in his hand.

The police report said the rank stepped backwards while calling on Balo to desist from his actions, but he continued to advance towards the rank who fell backwards.

Balo rushed towards the rank who then resorted to the use of force and shot him to his right thigh.

Balo was arrested and taken to the Port Mourant Hospital where he was treated and sent away and is presently in police custody. The Police Constable had sustained a sprained ankle when he fell and was also treated and sent away.

Balo was recently released from prison after serving a sentence for wounding committed on Raywattie. (Michel Outridge)
