Farmers, miners were misled on El Nino/La Nina phenomenon

DILIP JAIGOPAUL, former Hydrometeorological Officer attached to the Ministry of Agriculture stated in a release June 10, 1998 that the El Nino weather phenomenon has ended and there is no indication that there will be a recurrence of the drought like weather conditions in Guyana. He also reported that there are no traces that Guyana will be facing a La Nina weather situation (characterised by excessive rainfall).Mr. Jaigopaul theory of El Nino has misled the nation farmers and the mining sectors. The average daily discharge of rain has decreased resulting in less water for agriculture and mining in 2010.
Measurements of rainfall for the first three months of 2010 have indicated that there has been no tremendous increase in rainfall in the month of January, February and March. The rains did not come as a result of the Inter Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) in the vicinity of the Guianas. The rainfall is expected to continue from April. In some part of the world this year’s first crop output would drop reflecting reduced area sown due to lack of adequate water for irrigation. The 2010 paddy season in South America is well advanced and harvesting is underway in several countries, although the season has been plagued by El Nino related weather problems. In Brazil, the region’s largest rice producer, harvesting is expected to be underway in the central and southern parts of the country and total output is expected to increase.
