A clean-up campaign, which is intended to be the first of many, was successfully carried out on Wednesday by the Wismar Market Association. It was dubbed Project Wismar Clean-Up Campaign.
Many residents came out in support of the initiative which began at 5:30 h, in the vicinity of the Wismar Municipal Market.
With workers from the Linden Town Council lending a hand, the activity was deemed a success.
Regional Councillor Gerald Whittington (Sr.) who has responsibility for the area in Silvertown, observed, “If you could see the people around come out and the Town Council’s truck making trips removing the debris that was gathered, and we had a lot of people in this first venture.”
Part of Burnham Drive which stretches between the Wismar Municipal Market and the Linden River Front was targeted for cleaning.
The Linden Fire Service used their powerful hoses to wash the area which was followed by the cutting of unwanted vegetation which had grown in front of the market and the plot of land opposite.
This area has also been identified by the Linden Town Council for use as a park for the buses plying the Lethem route out of Linden.
The stuff which was heaped up by the residents was then taken away from the area by the Linden Municipality’s tractor and bobcat.
Treasurer of Project Wismar Group, John Rogers, said the campaign was aimed at enhancing the Wismar Municipal Market and its environs so as to create a better business environment.
According to Rogers “We are going to clean this whole place and when we schedule these exercises, we will ask people to come out and support it.”
He said what the group is asking for is the continued support.”
