TWO detectives from the Police Criminal Investigations Department (CID) have been jointly charged with attempting to obstruct the course of justice.
Sergeant Radesh Persaud, of Lot 91 Sixth Street, La Bonne Intention (LBI) and Lance Corporal Nagishwar Nauth Sukar, of Lot 147 Hope Low Lands, both East Coast Demerara addresses, appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson yesterday and pleaded not guilty.
Particulars of the alleged offence said, on February 16, they willingly attempted to obscure, prevent, pervert or defeat the course of justice by accepting $20,000 from Tinesha Butcher, in order to forebear prosecution in a criminal matter.
Attorney-at-law Mr. Sandil Kissoon, in association with Mr. Glen Hanoman, entered appearance for the defendants and said the charge before the Court is bad in law and should not affect a bail grant.
Police Inspector Stephen Telford, prosecuting, did not object to the application but requested that substantial surety be ordered and that the duo report to the CID until the case is concluded.
Persaud and Sukar were allowed pre-trial freedom on individual $50,000 bonds and were instructed to report to the CID on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
The case has been transferred to Sparendaam Court, also on East Coast Demerara, for March 16.
