… looking to run a vibrant entity
FORMER treasurer Fiona Harris was on Tuesday last elected the first-ever female president of the Guyana Amateur Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation (GABBFF) when that entity held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) at the Bank of Guyana building and she immediately plans to make the federation a vibrant one under her tenure for the year 2010.
Harris, who defeated both Clifton Rollox who was later elected secretary and Mark St. Clair the vice-president for the presidential position, told Chronicle Sport that her first order of business would be a meeting with her fellow executives, as there are two important tournaments to run off.
“As you are aware, the Hugh Ross Classics (HRC) is set for May 2 at the National Cultural Centre and even though some of the sponsors are attached to that event, we will be trying to get both the Novices and Intermediate championships off the ground as soon as possible,” stated Harris.
The 32-year-old former Miss Guyana Body Beautiful and Fitness champion also has the senior national male and female championships on her agenda and if her intention goes according to plans, athletes can find themselves competing in the best ever senior championships this year.
“The GABBFF is desirous of sending athletes to the Southern Caribbean Championships in Cali, Colombia, in July and the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Championships to be held in Aruba in September,” said Harris.
She further stated, “While the criteria for the selection of such athletes are yet to be decided, what is first and foremost on the mind of the executives is running off the local events, from which the various category winners can be selected to represent Guyana on the international stage in the abovementioned events.”
Harris plans to have the meeting with her other executives on Sunday, where the most important item on the agenda would be the Novices and Intermediate championships, while the planning of the way forward for the GABBFF is also on the cards.
“We are looking at having a good working relationship with the media, as this medium keeps the public informed of activities the various sporting organisations, hence the making of the year’s events will be made available through the secretary and public relations officer,” said Harris.
Harris, who plans to be a pro-active president, will be supported by St Clair who is the new vice-president, along with Rollox (secretary), Travis Peters (treasurer), Devon Wray (assistant secretary/treasurer) and Videsh Sookram (organising secretary) on the executive body.
The seven committee members are Prem Persaud, Rudolph Oscar, Leroy George, Sherlock Rigby, Tyron Eusebio, Adrian Andries and Ronald Livingstone.
Outgoing president Frank Tucker thanked the members of the former executive for the support given to him during his tenure as president and wished Harris and her executives all the best as they seek to take the sport of bodybuilding to a higher level.
