Following fatal incident Friday—
The Ministry of Home Affairs has said that despite the fatal prison brawl on Friday morning in which two prisoners were killed, the security of the prison is stable.
The Ministry said that between 02:10 hours and 02.30 hours on Friday last, most unfortunate fatal incident occurred at the Georgetown Prison which resulted in the death of two untried inmates, Solomon Blackman and Dyal Singh. Preliminary reports revealed that at approximately 02:10 hours, the ranks on duty responded to some unusual sounds emanating from the capital dormitory as if some one was tampering with the lock.
This dormitory houses remanded prisoners.
On completion of the investigation and while in the prison yard, the ranks were alerted by some loud noise in the same division where a prisoner was shouting that Solomon Blackman had assaulted another inmate, Dyal Singh. Returning to the dormitory, the ranks observed prisoner Blackman striking prisoner Singh who was lying on a mattress. The other prisoners became infuriated and attacked Blackman severely beating him.
The sirens were sounded and police, fire department and senior prison officers were informed.
They responded immediately and went to the Division where the two injured prisoners were taken out at approximately 02:40 hours.
They were taken to the Public Hospital where they were pronounced dead by the doctor on duty at approximately 03:40 hours.
The Ministry of Home Affairs regrets the occurrence of this incident and expresses its deepest sympathy to the family and relatives of the two prisoners,” according to a statement.
Prisoner Blackman was charged for murder committed on two policemen on 2004-03-01. On admission his age was recorded as 34 years.
Prisoner Blackman was said to be unstable.
Recently, due to persistent medical treatment, he showed some improvement.
Consequently, he was removed from the Social Division and allowed to live and mix with the general population in the prison.
Prisoner Dyal Singh was charged for murder committed in Supenaam on 2007-10-17. On admission his age was recorded as 46 years.
The police have begun their investigations into the fatal incident.
