IAC supports Hindu call for alcohol-free festivals

The Indian Arrival Committee (IAC) supports the call by the Hindu Community of Guyana for the festival of Holi (Phagwah) to maintain its sacred form and be respected. The IAC has noted that over the last few years, some entertainment promoters use Phagwah to encourage undesirable practices and have associated the sale of alcohol with the festival.
The IAC, which has in the past denounced such practices, takes this opportunity to reiterate that guilty promoters desist from indulging in such activities which bring much disrespect to the Hindu community.
The IAC’s annual Phagwah Mela will be held at its usual venue at the Bath Settlement Community Centre Ground on Monday, March 1, 2010, commencing at 14:00 hrs.
The event provides an opportunity for Guyanese to gather and participate in this rich colourful festival in an environment that is free from alcohol and gambling. The cultural programme will feature leading Guyanese entertainers. Admission is free.
