Education Ministry appeals for resumption by GTI staff

While undertaking review…
THE Ministry of Education yesterday appealed to striking part time lecturers at the Government Technical Institute (GTI) to resume teaching their courses so that their students would not be affected.
A statement said the Ministry is presently undertaking a total review of part time staff for all technical institutes and Cyril Potter College of Education (CPCE).
According to the statement, the Ministry is examining full time against part time courses and programmes, student enrolment, class size, student throughput for different programmes, teaching hours of full time staff, number of hours part time staff should be allowed per week, full time staff undertaking part time teaching and the number of hours.
The statement said, in terms of cost, the Ministry is looking at various rates and the provision in the Education Budget to meet any increases and the additional expenditure necessary to pay any such increase.
“The per capita training cost for each institution will be determined and the necessary policy, administrative, technical and academic programme changes effected in consultation with the various Boards of Governors,” the statement said.
The Ministry said it expects that, by the end of February, a final determination of part time rates of pay will be made known to all parties.
