NEUBRANDENBURG, Germany, (CMC) – Guyana’s Shawn Corbin was no match for Karo Murat Saturday night as the unbeaten German recorded a lopsided second-round technical knockout victory to retain his World Boxing Organisation (WBO) Inter-Continental light heavyweight title.
Murat floored Corbin twice and the referee stopped the scheduled 12-round bout at two minutes, 41 seconds of round two at Jahnsportforum Arena.
With the victory, Murat improved his unblemished record to 21-0 with 13 knockouts, while Trinidad-based Corbin slipped to 13 wins (9 knockouts) against two defeats.
Accompanied to Germany by his Trinidadian manager/promoter Boxu Potts, the 34-year-old Corbin arrived here midweek after taking the bout on short notice.
He was unable to gather any momentum in the bout against the younger champion and Murat delivered the impressive win he had promised his local fans.
Corbin, the reigning Caribbean Boxing Federation (CABOFE) champion, suffered his only previous loss in April 2007 against world-rated Panamanian Tito Mendoza in Panama City.
The 26-year-old Murat, a former European Boxing Union (EBU) super-middleweight champion at 168 pounds, before moving up the 175-pound light heavyweight division, is poised for a major world title fight.
He holds a top five rating with three world governing bodies – No.3 by the World Boxing Council (WBC) and No.4 by both the World Boxing Association (WBA) and World Boxing Organisation (WBO).
In the main event on Saturday night’s card, Germany’s Sebastian Sylvester retained his International Boxing Federation (IBF) middleweight title on a 10th round knockout of American Billy Lyell..
