MICHAEL Mohabir (no address given) pleaded guilty to simple larceny on Thursday, but Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo postponed sentencing him until Friday, February 5.
Police Inspector Satrohan Dayaram, prosecuting at New Amsterdam Court in Berbice, said the thief went into the shopping plaza owned by Mahendra Walker, who had left his ‘Motorola’ handset on the counter.
The Prosecutor said Mohabir was standing nearby when he saw the mobile phone, stole it and left the premises.
Mohabir, however, told Magistrate Nagamootoo that he made a purchase and, thinking that the instrument belonged to another customer ahead of him in a line, took it with the intention of giving it to her.
But the woman hurriedly entered a motor car which sped away, leaving him with the phone that he threw away five days later.
Mohabir has been remanded to prison pending sentence.
