Good mining practices needed

GOLD and other miners have to come to understand that in the pursuit of their livelihood, they cannot compromise the use of forest resources for other purposes, including logging, tourism and farming.

Most importantly, mining activities cannot be allowed to jeopardise the livelihoods of the indigenous Amerindian communities.

These are among the important considerations behind the guidelines the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission has been pursuing for years to improve performance in the sector for better planning and execution.

It is clear to me, from the destruction that has long accompanied some mining practices, that there is need for better coordination so that miners can comply with national and international guidelines and standards.

I accept that the government does not intend to slow down or shut the mining sector and all operators have to help in the bid for better standards.
