The majority of Guyanese are behind the government as it moves to improve overall standards in the mining industry to meet international benchmarks, so I cannot understand why some miners are up in arms against the government.
There have been many calls for the authorities to enforce the laws to stop the destruction of forests and rivers that result from some mining operations.
The use of mercury also comes to mind as this can have deadly effects on humans, animals, fish and other living organisms.
It seems to me that the miners association is made up of the rich boys club based in Georgetown whose operations cause the most destruction on our forests and who want to resist having to put their houses in order.
They are spreading false rumours to get others on their side and allow them to continue business as usual.
This cannot be allowed.
