Sehwag praises his bowlers for first Test win

INDIA’S stand-in captain Virender Sehwag praised his bowlers following their comfortable 113-run victory over Bangladesh in Chittagong.

Bangladesh needed to bat out the day to save the game, but fast bowler Ishant Sharma had earned early success in the morning and leg-spinner Amit Mishra claimed four wickets as Bangladesh, chasing 415 for victory, were bowled out for 301.

The second innings total was largely achieved through a maiden Test century from Mushfiqur Rahim (101) and a half-century from opener Tamim Iqbal (52), but Bangladesh had lost regular wickets in-between those efforts.

“We were bowled out for a low total in the first innings and I thought the bowlers did a fantastic job,” Sehwag said. “They bowled really well, hit the right areas and picked up wickets at the right time.”

He added: “Ishant generated a lot of pace and bounce and his two wickets in the first innings really proved the difference.

“The wicket was pretty good, there was something in it for the fast bowlers, the spinners got turn and it was also good to bat on.

“Three guys got hundreds in this match which goes to show that it was good to bat on as well.”

Man-of-the-match Sachin Tendulkar, who had lifted India’s total on the first day with a battling century – his 44th in Tests – was pleased with his performance.

“It was very important knock because we lost a lot of wickets after a good opening partnership on the first day,” Tendulkar said.

“There was a collapse between lunch and tea when he lost six wickets and that put a lot of pressure on us.

“It is important to put on a good total in the first innings and credit to the lower batting order for their support because those 40-50 runs proved crucial. (Eurosport)
