THE Queenstown-based Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) will be buzzing with activity from 08:30 h today, when the semi-finals and final of the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA)/Guyana Beverages Company-sponsored Busta Twenty20 second division competition climaxes in coloured clothing.
According to president of the GCA, Alfred Mentore, a carnival atmosphere is anticipated by cricket-loving fans who turn up at the venue to witness the matches, as the GCA will be teaming up with Ansa McAl for an event which will conclude their 2009 cricket programme.
“We are looking at making this day a historic one in the annals of the GCA and what better ways to do so, than to have the teams compete in coloured clothing and with white balls as was specified at the launching of the tournament last year.
We are always looking at new and innovative ways to improve cricket in Georgetown, which is the hub of Guyana’s cricket. This is just one way of doing things, especially with Ansa McAl coming on board for the day’s event, with a view to have something bigger and better the next time around.”
He continued, “The day’s activities will not only culminate the tournament, but also bring an end to all GCA’s competitions for 2009.
“We had a good year in terms of competition, as we were able to run off all of them, while completing some of them before the year ended and this in itself, speaks volumes on the efficient and articulate way in which we conduct our business when it comes to cricket and I must say thanks to my executives for their worthy support of our cricket relating issues.”
Group ‘A’ winners Georgetown Cricket Club will oppose Malteenoes Sports Club who were the runners-up in group ‘B’ in the first semifinal, while Guyana National Industrial Corporation (GNIC) who won group ‘B’ will take on group ‘A’s runner-up Everest Cricket Club in the other.
The winners of the two semi-finals will clash in the final to be played immediately after the exhibition match which may be a 10-over affair and is being used to give the players who will be competing in the final, a break before doing so.
Everest, who lost just one game in the preliminaries stages to eventual group leaders GCC, will led by Andrew Lovell and will include in their lineup Surendra Heeralall, Chris Patadin, the Pereira brothers, former national player David Harper and youth wicketkeeper Dennis Mangru.
GCC will be led by Paul Bevan who will receive support from youth players Delon Fernandes, W. Hyman and S. Grimes, while GNIC will feature Collis Butts, the son of former West Indies player and current chairman of the selectors Clyde Butts, national Under-17 skipper Dexter Solomon, the talented Ranole Bourne and the hard-hitting Cylus Gibson who is one of the few players to record a century in the preliminary round of the competition.
Former national middle-order batsman Neil Barry, along with Sean Holder, Danny Narayan, the explosive opener Troy Lewis, current junior nationals Seon Daniels and Shaquille McNichol Williams will spear head MSC’s challenge.
Finger-licking barbecue, fried fish, a well-stock bar with products from Ansa McAl, pulsating music and a raffle for hampers, donated by Beharry Group of Companies, Ansa McAl and Busta, will be part of the day’s activities to cater for the needs of the fans.
Tickets for the barbecue which will be served with a complimentary beverage of your choice (from Busta or Ansa McAl,) will be on sale at all GCA affiliate clubs for $1 000.
Raffle tickets will be on sale at the venue. Admission is free and all proceeds garnered from the day’s activities will go towards the GCA’s cricket development fund.
Managing-director of GBC, Robert Selman, and his team of representatives will assist with the distribution of prizes won during the competition at the conclusion of the final.
