GCB Senior Female Inter-district …
A MAGNIFICENT spell of leg-spin bowling from RB Sewnarine, coupled with an unbeaten 27 from Sheneigh Emerson guided East Coast past Central Essequibo in their semifinal encounter of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) senior female inter-district competition at the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) ground yesterday.
Winning the toss and opting to bat first in sunny conditions and on a flat track that was conducive for batting, Central Essequibo faltered against the spin of Sewnarine, who took 4-14 from 5.2 overs, and were bowled out for 93 from 25.2 overs.
Extras top-scored with 33 including 26 wides, while Kumarie Persaud led the batters for her side with 24 which was decorated with four fours. She received support from Sheneigh Calvan who touched the boundary ropes twice in her 13.
When East Coast began their reply, they slipped to 43-4 in the 10th over, as Venita Sewsarran who took 3-28 from her allotted eight overs troubled the East Coast batters with her gentle medium pace.
But following the demise of national middle order batter Darlene Gale who was caught and bowled by Sewsarran for nine, Emerson who struck back-to-back fours after the luncheon interval which saw East Coast on 35-3 from 9 overs, found a useful partner in Kavita Yadram (7*).
An unbroken fifth-wicket partnership which was worth 54 runs between the two, steered their side to their eventual total of 97-4 from 21 overs, against the bowling of Sewsarran, while at the same time, earning their team a place in the final where they face Rose Hall Town at the same venue on Sunday.
Emerson displayed her ability to play shots on both sides of the wicket, when she turned Persaud through backward square leg twice for boundaries, followed by a cut through point for another, which brought a round of applause from the small but appreciative crowd, including president of the East Coast Cricket Board and vice-president of the GCB, Bissoondyal Singh.
