January 18 fatal accident driver remanded

THE route 42 mini-bus driver implicated in the January 18 fatal accident was remanded to prison Wednesday, on a causing death by dangerous driving charge.

Terrence Ramjohn, 44, of 37 Friendship, East Bank Demerara, appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson, where particulars of the indictable offence said he drove BMM 2018, on Hadfield Street, Georgetown, in a manner dangerous to the public and cause the demise of octogenarian Victoria Barron.

Police Inspector Stephen Telford, prosecuting, successfully objected to bail for the accused, stating that the victim, who suffered multiple injuries, was taken to a hospital by Ramjohn who left her there and went away.

Police had to set up a roadblock on the East Bank Demerara Public Road to apprehend the prisoner, the prosecutor said, noting an increase in road fatalities.

Attorney-at-law Mr. Roysdale Forde, for the Defence, said Ramjohn was proceeding in a congested area, South of Public Buildings, when the woman walked into his path.

The lawyer said, as soon as the mishap occurred, the accused conveyed the injured woman to a hospital and fully assisted the Police.
The case has been transferred to another Court for January 27.
