GUYANA’s response at a national level to the recent natural disaster that manifested in the City of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, is an apt exemplification of the kind of leadership that the country has been experiencing over the past few years.
Hats off to the President for once again taking the lead in bringing relief to a nation that has been devastated by a disaster of this magnitude.
Looking at the international news, I can’t help but feel extremely lucky and proud at the same time. Lucky that we have been spared such disaster, and proud that Guyana was the first country to initiate a response in spite of all its constrains, making a pledge of US$1M, which amounts to 0.08 percent of our GDP.
Kudos too to the proactiveness of the National Committee for Relief for Haiti, for its unwavering efforts in securing much needed monetary and other resources to assist our brothers and sisters in Haiti. Surely we have to agree that the January 2005 flood was mild in comparison to the current disaster.
