Grandfather Bacchus succumbs

George Bacchus, 57-year-old grandfather of 46 West Ruimveldt, struck down by a speeding minibus at Ramp Road, East Bank Demerara, on Monday morning, died at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Georgetown Public Hospital on Monday night.

Bacchus who arrived at the institution suffering severe brain and other head injuries was found to have also sustained punctures to his lungs and liver, and suffered massive internal bleeding, his son Ean Bacchus told the Guyana Chronicle.

He died in the ICU at 23:00 hrs on Monday, shortly after being taken out of the operating theatre. A post mortem is to be performed on Friday.

Bacchus’ daughter, Emalie, an employee of King’s Advertising Company, said that around 8:15 hrs. Monday her father was escorting her ten-year-old son Daniel Williams, a Grade 5 pupil of West Ruimveldt Secondary School, across the Ramp Road junction when he was struck down by a speeding minibus.

Meanwhile, at the Bacchus home yesterday, family members were inconsolable. George Bacchus leaves to mourn his wife Rajcoomarie, nine children, several grandchildren and other relatives and friends.

Meanwhile, another villager, 37-year-old Dhanraj Narine of 115 West Ruimveldt, was also warded at the Intensive Care Unit of the GPH after reportedly being hit by a motor cycle on the West Ruimveldt Public Road last Friday.

The accident occurred around 19:15h, and Narine sustained injuries to his head.
His condition is still listed as critical.
And in a separate incident, a 17-year-old male of 45 West Ruimveldt was admitted to the Male Surgical Ward of the GPHC after being stabbed with an ice-pick in his abdomen. The incident occurred around 21:00 h on Monday, in East Ruimveldt.
