The Georgetown seawall, Kingston, in the vicinity of the Pegasus Hotel was yesterday a buzz of activity with technical personnel from both the Guyana Telephone & Telegraph (GT&T) and Global Marine Systems Limited (GMSL), working to effect the landing of the Suriname-Guyana Submarine Cable system.

An official ceremony is planned this afternoon for the landing of the shore end cable which is touted to greatly improve the quality of the local service provider’s internet connection, and provide secure, high-speed broadband communications capacity for government, business and other users.
The cable will allow for more than 300 times the current band-with capacity, said GT&T which together with Suriname telecommunications company TELESUR are investing US$60m in the manufacture and installation of the new Suriname-Guyana Submarine Cable System. It originates at Chaguaramas, in Trinidad and Tobago and connects with cable stations in Georgetown and Totness in Suriname via a branching unit in the Atlantic.
The turnkey project is expected to enter its testing phase sometime March, prior to becoming operational.
