Chairman appeals to farmers: let gravity flow work
CHAIRMAN of Region Two (Pomeroon/Supenaam), Mr. Alli Baksh has appealed to rice farmers, cultivating between Anna Regina and New Road on Essequibo Coast, to cooperate with the Regional Administration and await gravity flow of water to irrigate their fields.
He said it is costing millions of dollars per day to pump water from Pomeroon River, through the Dawa Station at Tapakuma, to flood cultivated lands in the current El Nino weather conditions.
According to Baksh, farmers are using tractor driven pumps to access water from drainage and irrigation (D&I) canals, preventing the rise to the desired level for irrigation by gravity flow.
He warned planters to desist pumping from those sources and allow for gravity to work.
They also should not tamper or interfere with Government D&I structures, Baksh said. (Rajendra Prabhulall)
