Police reported that at about 17:00 hours on Saturday Attorney-at-Law, Khemraj Ramjattan, went to the Albion Police Station, Berbice, where he requested to see two men who were in custody at the station.
The two men had been arrested as police continue their investigations into the armed robbery committed on a family at Hampshire, Corentyne, on Friday December 18, 2009.
The Attorney-at-Law spoke to the two men who informed him in the presence of the police that the police had not assaulted nor ill-treated them in any way since their arrest.
It had been alleged that one of the men was beaten and the other shot by the police.
The two men were released on bail yesterday and the investigations are ongoing.
On Friday a bandit was reportedly shot and killed by the police in Berbice during a confrontation following an armed robbery.
Dead is Hemchand Gopaul, 18, of Rose Hall, Corentyne, Berbice.
Police reported that at about 01:30 hours Friday, at Hampshire Village, Corentyne, Berbice, three men entered a dwelling house and robbed the family.
The victims Maria Mootoo, 45, her sister Savitri Mootoo, 41, along with their mother, Latchmini Narinesammy, 68, and a brother were at home when three men armed with a firearm and a cutlass broke a window and entered the home.
The bandits held the two sisters at gunpoint and took away a quantity of jewellery and $85,000 in cash and discharged a round during their escape.
However, quick response and information led to the police coming under fire at the Rose Hall Cemetery and subsequently at Port Mourant, Corentyne, during pursuit.
The police returned fire fatally wounding Hemchand Gopaul, 18, of Rose Hall, Corentyne.
Another suspect was arrested shortly after in the Port Mourant district and is in police custody assisting with the investigations.
Eight 9mm. rounds were found in the pocket of Hemchand Gopaul who has been positively identified as one of the three men who carried out the armed robbery on the family at Hampshire.
A 9mm. warhead was recovered by the police at the scene of the robbery.
