And at Hampshire Village, on the Corentyne, one of three perpetrators in an armed robbery was fatally shot by the police and another arrested.

Investigations revealed that the incident occurred at about 01:30h Friday while Maria Mootoo, 45; her sister, Savitri Mootoo, 41; their mother, Latchmini Narinesammy, 68; and a brother were at home.

Reports are that the three men, who were armed with a firearm and a cutlass, broke a window and entered the home. They then held the two sisters at gunpoint and relieved them of a quantity of jewellery and $85,000 in cash.

The bandits discharged a round as they made their escape.

However, quick response and information led to the police cornering them at the Rosehall Cemetery, and subsequently at Port Mourant, Corentyne, coming under fire in the process on both occasions.

The lawmen returned fire and when the dust settled, it was discovered that Hemchand Gopaul, 18, of Rosehall, Corentyne was mortally wounded.

One of his two partners in crime was nabbed shortly thereafter in Port Mourant, and is in police custody assisting with the investigations.

The Police said they found eight 9mm. rounds in the pocket of dead bandit, who was positively identified as one of the three men who carried out the armed robbery on the family at Hampshire.
A 9mm. warhead was recovered by the police at the scene of the robbery
