WE the members of the Guyana Justices of the Peace and Commissioners of Oaths to Affidavits Association wish to congratulate Mr. Steven Meerai on his recent appointment as Commander of the Berbice Division of the Police Force.
It is a very challenging job with the increase in crime in that country, but we realize that with his experience, qualifications, commitment and leadership the increase in crime would be brought under control and the people of Berbice could be assured of a safer place.
We also appreciate the method intended to approach the problem. It is evident that he will be getting the full support of the ranks and public. By starting in house with the clean up and refocusing, we are sure the residents will regain confidence in the police and support them as they could then become the ears and eyes of the community, also supplying valuable intelligence to the force.
He is a very approachable person and the announcement that the residents can contact him personally at any time including weekends and at night is commendable. With this kind of public involvement, the incidence of criminal activities will surely be alleviated and eventually controlled to a minimum.
Drugs may be the chief source of criminal behaviour and his intention to tackle this scourge first will indeed have an impact on positive law enforcement. Increasing anti crime patrols along with the use of the Tactical Services Unit will definitely bolster the image of the fight against crime and ultimately the residents themselves will lend support by passing on valuable intelligence on suspicious activities in their areas. Tackling the traffic problem will also help in the overall strategy of crime deterrence and prevention.
