Alston hits unbeaten half-century, South demolish Essequibo Islands
AN unbeaten and pugnacious half- century from 14-year-old Terrence Alston helped guide South Georgetown to a comfortable eight-wicket victory over South Essequibo in their Guyana Cricket Board (GCB)/Ministry of Education Under-15 inter-district quarterfinal at the Demerara Cricket Club ground yesterday.
After seeing his side bowl out their opponents for a meagre 88 from 34.2 overs, Alston struck four sixes, with the last one not only sealing the win but also raising his half-century, as South Georgetown reached 89-2 from 23.4 overs.
In South Essequibo’s innings, extras top-scored with 31 while Moin Khan struck two fours and one six in his 24 and national Under-15 left-arm spinner Ricardo Adams contributed 19, decorated with two sixes and one four.
Bowling for South Georgetown, skipper Devon Lord, Rondell Dazzell and Alston took two wickets each for 7, 11 and 12 runs respectively.
When South Georgetown began their reply, they were placed on the back foot by the pace/spin combination of Adams and Hassan Mohammed and quickly lost their openers, which left them on 17-2 in the sixth over of their innings.
But Alston was joined by Andrew Gibson who contributed an unbeaten 18 in their unbroken third-wicket partnership of 72 runs from 18 overs, with Alston, who plays for Georgetown Cricket Club and attends the North Ruimveldt Secondary School, easing the shackles with maximums off Khan and Oudit.
Mohammed (1-13) and Adams 1-18 were the lone wicket-takers for Essequibo Islands in the rain-interrupted match.
