I refer to a recent media release by some officers of the PPP attacking those who would wish to have President Jagdeo to have another term as President. Those officers who issued that media release called on members, supporters and well-wishers of the PPP not to support such a call. In that release, quite unwittingly, the officers who issued it distinctly separated themselves from the members, supporters and well-wishers of the PPP. If those Party officers had ascertained the views of the members, supporters and well-wishers of the Party as to whether they wished to have President Jagdeo serve for a third term or not, they would have been on less slippery ground.
Very often in history, people have called on a reluctant leader to remain in their service to save the nation from falling into the doldrums or for holding off undesirables, whether invaders or locals, from seizing the seat of power. In ancient Rome, Greece, Carthage and Old Europe many leaders who were prevailed upon to stay and serve had saved their peoples. To compare President Jagdeo with any of the Presidential aspirants is to compare chalk to cheese. Jagdeo has been doing an incomparable job for the social and economic progress of Guyana and has made this nation known and respected worldwide and if ‘people’s power’ could prevail on him to stay and serve, this would be a happy day for all true Guyanese.
