New Anglican Bishop of Guyana ordained

PRIME Minister Samuel Hinds, performing the functions of the Office of President, was among the congregation, including visitors from across the West Indies, who witnessed the ordination and consecration yesterday, of the seventh Anglican Bishop of Guyana.

The Venerable Cornell Jerome Moss assumed the post at a service, broadcast live on radio, in St. George’s Cathedral, Georgetown, succeeding the Right Reverend Randolph George, who retired on December 31, 2008.

Before George, the other Bishops of the Diocese were William Piercy Austin (1842 to 1883); William Proctor Swaby (1893); Edward Archibald Parry (1900 to 1917); Oswald Parry (1921) and Alan John Knight (1937 to 1949).

Moss, who hails from The Bahamas, was previously Archdeacon of Nassau.

Following yesterday’s ceremony, there will be a meeting, today of the three houses of the Provincial Synod – House of Bishops, House of Clergy and House of Laity – to elect the next Archbishop of the Province of the West Indies.
