A TAXI driver and a baker have been charged with attempting to murder a policeman.
Kawal Itwaru, 35, of Lot 532 Belvedere Squatting Area and Shammie Moothoosammy, 39, of Lot 19 ‘B’ Hampshire, both Corentyne addresses, are accused of having attempted to unlawfully kill Constable Sandam Singh of the Berbice Anti Crime Squad.
They appeared before Magistrate Teijnarine Ramroop, at Whim Court, Corentyne and were remanded to prison.
The charge followed investigations into a robbery committed on overseas based Guyanese, 53-year-old Ramsammy Moonsammy and his relatives, last November 18.
Singh and four other ranks were on patrol and responded to a call at Hampshire, where, on their arrival, Singh was shot on his left side face, upper and lower jaw, forehead and temple.
He was rushed to New Amsterdam Hospital before being transferred to Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) where he is still a patient.
The co-accused are also facing five counts of robbery committed on Moonsammy, his wife, Nadira, daughters Nadina and Laleena and son-in-law Lincoln Maharaj, who lost property valued $8M, including cash and jewellery.
Police Sergeant Michael Grant, prosecuting, successfully opposed bail for the duo, citing the nature, gravity and prevalence of offences in which guns are used.
The case will be called again, for report, on December 15.
