Man charged with sodomising woman also refused bail

MOHAMED Hanoman, 34, of Friendship Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara, was yesterday remanded to prison, by Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson, on a buggery charge.

Particulars of the indictable offence said it was committed on November 2, when the accused sodomised a woman.

Defence Counsel Vic Puran made an unsuccessful plea for Hanoman to be granted bail, arguing that the man was unlawfully in custody.

The lawyer claimed Hanoman took the woman to destination of her request and she disappeared for two days before implicating him in a report to her parents although she was with someone else.

However, Police Sergeant Kevin London, prosecuting, said there is evidence to support the charge and maintained his objection to pre-trial freedom.

The case was transferred to another Court for tomorrow.

Chandrake Persaud (no address given) was also denied bail yesterday, on an indictable carnal knowledge charge in the same Court.

It is alleged that he, between October 31 and November 2, carnally knew a girl under the age of 15 years.

The accused told the Court the virtual complainant said she was 16 years old and he believed her as she did not look younger.
His case was also re-assigned to another Court, for November 12.
