THE various prize-winners in the recently held DJ Stress second T20 cricket festival held at the Albion Community Centre ground in Berbice last month were rewarded for their sterling efforts at a simple presentation ceremony which was carried live on NCN Berbice in the Ancient County.

True to his word of giving back to the community, Paul Bonar aka DJ Stress also donated over $275 000 to three charitable organisations in the area, including the setting-up of an overhead water tank and pump at the Camal’s Home for Homeless Children and Battered Women, situated in Albion.

This donation followed that of $100 000 to the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) and $25 000 to the Demerara Bank’s Berbice Women Warriors who lost their 10/10 cricket match to the Gizmos and Gadgets Georgetown Panthers.

Skipper of the victorious Cavaliers team and embattled national middle order batsman Gajanand Singh stated that as was the case in the first festival, wherein his side donated their winnings to charitable organisations, same would be the procedure with their second intake from the tournament.

Both losing semifinalists Poonai’s Pharmacy Corentyne Titans and Universal DVD Club New Amsterdam/Canje Tigers also received their cash prize of $100 000, with all the cash prizes being awarded through the kind compliments of GT&T Cellink.

Individual prizes were also distributed, with regional wicket-taking record holder Mahendra Nagamootoo being the chief beneficiary, as he collected individual awards for best bowler, best bowling per innings, Most Valuable Player (MVP) along with his two man-of-the-match awards in the second semifinal and finals respectively.

In his thank-you speech, Bonar expressed his sentiments to the cricket-loving public of Berbice who turned out in their thousands to offer their support to the one-day festival, the second of its kind under a single organiser, following the first at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence on May 1.

He also took the time to thank companies such as beverage giant Banks DIH, Guysuco, NCN Berbice, GT&T, Sterling Products Limited, Poonai’s Pharmacy, Gizmos and Gadgets, Universal DVD Club along with Dr Walter Singh, Ms Dianne Deoraj the officer in charge of Demerara Bank (Rosehall branch), president of the BCB Keith Foster, Imran Hamid, Renwick Batson and the ground staff of Albion Community Centre ground.

Giving their views on the tournament, all three agreed that it was well organised, planned and executed to the last T being crossed and I being dotted, heaping tremendous praise on Bonar and his wife who, unknown to many, was a tower of strength behind the success of the tournament.
