Mitchell strolls to 94th consecutive win

LINDEN’S Rudolph Mitchell strolled past his opponents last Sunday to keep his title as Guyana’s Race Walking champion with another convincing victory to chalk up his 94th win.

The race which marked the launching of the Cavaliers Sports and Tour Club’s 5th race walk month of activities being held under the theme ‘Race Walking – A Healthy Sport’, commenced at the Prairie International Hotel, Coverden, East Bank Demerara and ended at the Soesdyke Methodist Church.

Finishing second to the walking phenomenon was Jeremy Cornelius with Donna Ramkissoon in the third position. Clayson Ralph and Jaush Bunbury came fourth and fifth respectively.

Prizes were donated by Modern Optical Service while Public Service Minister Dr. Jennifer Westford provided the refreshments for the event.

Meanwhile, the CSTC will stage two races this weekend which will take on an international flavour with walkers from the Caribbean expected to match steps with their local counterparts.

On Saturday the CSTC will run off the Forbes Burnham Memorial Race Walk starting at 06:30 h at the National Cultural Centre along Homestretch Avenue, ending at the Place of the Seven Ponds in the Botanical Gardens. The second race is billed for Sunday with six laps around the National Park in memory of the late outstanding Guyanese journalist Clarence D. Kirton.

Trophies, medals and other prizes will be at stake at both events and interested participants must be at the starting line at 06:00 h for both races.
