Barbados to stage 2011 Lawyers Cricket World Cup

CAMBRIDGE, England CMC – Barbados repelled a strong bid from Australia, Monday, and secured hosting rights for the 2011 Lawyers Cricket World Cup.

The third biennial competition will be staged in the Caribbean island after Barbados defeated the Australians 7-2 when the vote was taken by representatives of teams assembled for this summer’s tournament.

Both the West Indies and Australia had been lobbying other teams over the past two weeks to host the next tournament.

While Australia lay strong claims for hosting the tournament, Barbados came prepared with a glossy Magazine presentation from Ralph Thorne QC, one of the players on the West Indies North team.

The tournament in the Caribbean will come off in August 2011, just after the island’s popular Crop Over festival.

“Barbados needs this tournament, the government is anxious to have this tournament, and you all know that we can organise, take for instance, the 2007 Cricket World Cup with the final in Barbados, and next year we will host the final of the ICC World 20/20 tournament,” Thorne said in his presentation.

In the magazine presentation, there were messages from Barbados Prime Minister, David Thompson; Chief Justice Sir David Simmons; Attorney General Freundel Stuart QC; Joel Garner, West Indies fast-bowling legend and President of the Barbados Cricket Association; Sir Hilary Beckles, Principal of the Cave Hill Campus of the University of the West Indies, and the Minister of Tourism, Richard Sealy.

The West Indies are hoping for additional teams for the next tournament, such as Malaysia, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Canada, and Hong Kong.

On the field this week, West Indies reached the semi-finals where they lost by 115 runs to Australia.

Batting first, Australia chalked up 257 for five in the allotted 35 overs in mixed weather conditions.

In reply, West Indies were in trouble very early, losing three quick wickets.

Despite fighting knocks from Krishna Jaglal (30), Kiel Taklalsingh (24), and captain Prakash Moosai (20), West Indies crumbled to 142 all out in the 24th over.

West Indies South also ended their schedule with a loss to Ireland.

West Indies South made 112, with Aaron Thomas top-scoring with 34.

Ireland cruised past that score with five wickets down.

T&T attorney Guy Hannays, became the only bowler in the tournament to take a hat-trick.
