BALRAM Khandhi, the leading Progressive Youth Organisation (PYO) member gunned down at Corentyne, Berbice after attending the 27th Congress of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) on July 22, 2002, was remembered at a moving wreath-laying ceremony last week. The commemoration took place at the Cheddi Jagan Biodiversity Park, Lima Sands, where scores of PPP members and villagers were in attendance. Chairman of Region Two (Pomeroon/Supenaam), Mr. Alli Baksh, an executive member, said the occasion was a very sad one because it reminded of attacks on party members who attended the Congress at Port Mourant, Corentyne. He said political criminals fired at PPP members as they travelled in an open back pick-up vehicle, killing Khandhi, then a young teacher at Abram Zuil Secondary School, also on Essequibo Coast. Several tributes were paid to the deceased, who was described as a man with great vision for the future who was in the forefront of organising youths in many social and economic activities. Former Parliamentarian, Mr. Isahack Basir said Khandhi’s work at school and with the PYO was so complementary that the relevant Government Ministry had awarded him a scholarship to pursue studies in Medical Science in Cuba. He said Khandhi was cut down at the age of 17, from a family of five. Khandhi’s ashes have been entombed in the same park where the function was held and wreaths were laid by Baksh, Vice-Chairman Mr. Vishnu Samaroo, Basir, Parliamentarian Mr. Parmanand Persaud, PYO Executive Member Nadine Persaud and the parents and sister of the dead man. The programme also featured bajans and reflections on the life of Khandhi.
