Police charge two for driving under the influence

Police have prosecuted two persons for driving under the influence when they were tested with the use of the breathalyser following an accident at Turkeyen, East Coast Demerara, on July 25, 2009.

The test showed that the alcohol in their systems was above the legal limit.

Bachan Balram of Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara, and Sheik Haniff of Industry, East Coast Demerara, were charged and appeared before Magistrate Yohance Cave at the Sparendaam Magistrate Court yesterday.

They pleaded guilty and were each fined $7,500.00.

Also, the driver involved in the fatal accident at Half Mile, Wismar, on Saturday, which resulted in the death of pedal cyclist Winston Craig, was tested and found to have been over the legal limit at the time of the accident.

He is expected to be charged in court today.
