THE Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA),Guyana Chapter will be hosting the second of its proposed Seminars on Risk Management and Controls tomorrow at the Pegasus Hotel. According to the President of this local body, Mr John Seeram, this seminar will focus on:
* What risk management and controls mean for you and your organisation;
* its roles and responsibilities;
* the impact of poor risk management and controls on the organisation;
* weak or strong controls — how to use risk management to focus on right controls;
* identifying and assessing risks and building the right controls to address risk exposures;
* risk-based auditing: targetting audit resource at the company’s high-risk areas and strategic priorities
The facilitator of this seminar will be Ms. Clair Gomez-Miller of Trinidad and Tobago, who is the Institute’s District Adviser for the Caribbean region on internal auditing, and an active member of the group’s Trinidad chapter. She represents the Caribbean at international forums, and advocates the profession of internal auditing.
In April of this year, she was one of two facilitators at the Institute’s first seminar on Auditing Standards and Effective Report Writing, which was a tremendous success.
The current global economic crisis, which is resulting among others, in financial closures and bail outs, necessitates that the Guyana Chapter of the IIA should now be playing a very important role in areas such as governance, risk management and controls. In so doing, two more seminars are earmarked for this year.
