Additionally, several children were treated for various eye complaints and, in some cases, were given free spectacles by another volunteer.
The equipment for the eye testing and screening of the children was provided by Preferred Health Partners in New York.
Dr Carryl, who is Chairman of the Department of Surgery and Director of the Surgery Residency Programme at the Brooklyn Hospital Centre, is the lead surgeon of the OMAT team which comprised two surgeons, an ophthalmologist, a surgical nurse and an anesthesiologist.
Medical Superintendent of the Linden Hospital Complex, Dr Farouk Ryasat, had indicated that the Chinese doctors at the Linden Hospital Complex were due to take their vacation, and, “we don’t want any interruption in the surgery that we are doing, so Dr Carryl brought an anesthesiologist to facilitate the surgeries and the amount of patients that we have.”
The medical team began their surgical work Monday and by Thursday had completed 19 surgeries.
The team comprised surgeons Dr Stephen Carryl and Dr Van Duwong, anesthesiologist Dr Earl Pollard, surgical nurse Ms. Lynnette Leyow, and ophthalmologist Dr Wisly Augustine.
Dr Augustine was scheduled to treat between 70 to100 students of the Wismar Christianburg ‘Multi’ Secondary School, several of whom spectacles.
The ‘Multi’ School at Linden is the alma mater of Dr Carryl.
