Courts adjourned after rotting ceiling debris hits magistrate

BERBICE Magistrate Geeta Chandan Persid Edmond adjourned New Amsterdam Court unexpectedly yesterday morning, after being hit by debris that fell from the rotting ceiling in her chambers.

She was on her way to the washroom when fragments of what appeared to be asbestos landed on her head and clothing.

Immediately, she began to cough and felt a burning sensation in her eyes.

The Police Prosecutor, Inspector Satrohan Dayaram, who was called into the chambers, also complained of an unusual feeling in his throat and nose.

The magistrate, who was also expected to preside at Blairmont Court, West Bank Berbice yesterday, postponed going there, too, on being advised to seek medical attention.

A Court official said the condition of the premises was previously reported and urgent works to be undertaken were put out to tender.

In addition, a representative of the Legal Affairs Ministry had visited to assess what needs to be done.
