Freed treason accused, Mark Benschop, General Secretary of the Guyana Trades Union Congress (GTUC), Norris Witter, and President of the Caribbean Congress of Labour (CCL), Lincoln Lewis were yesterday released on bail.
Reports state that at around 12:30 h, bail was posted in the sum of $10,000 each, and they were allowed to leave the Brickdam Police Station where they were being held since around midday Wednesday.
The trio was arrested for disorderly behavior and resisting arrest during an illegal protest outside the Office of the Commissioner of Police, Eve Leary, Georgetown.
The men are contending that they did nothing wrong neither did they break any laws, and refused several proposals for bail since they were arrested.
This newspaper understands that the trio did not personally concede to bail being posted for them.
There were reports that they would have been placed before the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday morning to answer charges of disorderly behavior, and as such a throng of supporters had gathered outside the court.
However, no charges were brought against them.
The trio was told to return to the police station today.
The trio was hauled off to the Brickdam Police Station on Wednesday where they were processed and placed in the lock-ups.
They had been staging a protest outside Commissioner Henry Greene’s office during the Police Awards ceremony.
At Brickdam Police Station, Lewis and Benschop were overheard singing the hymn, “What a friend we have in Jesus”, and the “Lord is My Shepherd” while in the enquiries office.
It was after lunch when the trio was placed in the lock-ups and waved to media operatives who had gathered there.
The men had held similar protests outside the Ministry of Home Affairs on Tuesday and at the opening of the CARICOM Heads of Government Meeting and the Ministry of Education, voicing several issues of interest.
