Leonora primary tops Region 3 at NGSA

LEONORA Primary School retained its regional supremacy at the National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA) 2009 by copping 14 top places among the top 20 in Region Three (Essequibo Islands/West Demerara).

Twelve pupils are heading to Queens College and two have secured places at Bishop’s High School, a release from Regional Information Officer, Jaidev Dudhnath said.

Leading the bunch to the Country’s top secondary school, Queens College is Abhimanyu Dev of Lenora primary, who secured 562 marks and gained 4th place in the country. The nine-year-old Dev is the Region’s top performer and is the youngest student who wrote the examination this year.

Overall the region copped 16 place at Queens College and four places at Bishop’s High school.

The other 19 top places across the region went to Lisa John 559, Leonora primary; Farahnaz Hosain 556, Zeelugt Primary; Faudia Ramjohn 555; Saraswati Jahawir 554; Saskia Khalil 546, all of Lenora primary; Ahreef Bacchus 548, Two Brothers Primary, Shanetta Timal 546, Niroopa Hasraj 546; Sarah Hack 545, Firyal Samad 545, all of Lenora Primary, Towanna Fletcher 544; Den Amstel primary; Denesh Singh 543, Wales Primary; Alicia Mangal 542, Joshua Powdar 542; Irishikesh Ramprashaud 542, all of Lenora Primary; Romeo Hirallal 541 and Dene Talsie 541, both of Mc Gillvary Primary; Reshana Imrit 539 and Matthew Persaud 537, both of Lenora Primary. An analysis of the Region’s performance revealed that 84 (or 3.7%) pupils have secured places at senior secondary schools and 52.8% acquired places at junior secondary schools.

According to Regional Education Officer Marlyn Jones-O’ Donoghue, at the National Level, Region Three was able to secure 20 places in the Top one percent. She informed the most improve Schools are Endeavour and the Commons, No 2, Canals Polder, West Bank Demerara and the Den Amstel Primary, West Coast Demerara.

O’ Donoghue opined that the intervention of the new literacy and numeracy programmes have contributed significantly to improved performance across the Region.
