SIX local cyclists have been invited to participate in the Annual West Indies versus The World cycling meet in Trinidad and Tobago. According to one of the cyclists’ parent, the six cyclists were all invited by the Trex Cycle Club of Trinidad, which is owned by former Commonwealth gold medallist Gene Samuels, and all their expenses including airfare, accommodation and meals will be borne by the club.
The cyclists are Warren McKay, Leer Nunes, Alonzo Greaves, Geron Williams, Christopher Holder and Daniel Ramchurjee.
Five of the six cyclists left Guyana on Tuesday and will join Greaves who was already in the Twin Island Republic.
McKay, Nunes and Greaves will compete in the senior races while Williams, Holder and Ramchurjee will vie for honours in the junior category.
The five-week meet will get under way this evening with a 40-mile Criterion around the Queen’s Park Savannah.
Over the years, local cyclists have been attending the meet which attracts some of the world’s leading cyclists and have been very successful in winning races.
In 2007, McKay was adjudged the best Category one cyclist on show while 17-year-old Williams, who has been attending the meet since he was nine years old and has been winning lots of gold medals, was adjudged top Boys’ 12-14 cyclist.
Apart from these six cyclists a few others have stated an interest in participating, but are finding it difficult to raise the necessary finances.
The six cyclists who are currently in Trinidad cannot be part of this Sunday’s Cheddi Jagan Memorial 60-mile Road Race which is set for the Essequibo Coast, as their stay in Trinidad will be for the next five weeks.
