MOHAMMED Khan, the canter driver involved in the Versailles, West Bank Demerara accident last Tuesday, which took the life of a 25-year-old man, yesterday appeared at the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court. Khan, of Sea View, Anna Catherina, West Coast Demerara, appeared before Magistrate Fazil Azeez and pleaded guilty to being an unlicensed driver and being in breach of insurance.
On July 7 last, at Versailles Public Road, Khan drove motor lorry GLL 8336 when he was not the holder of a driver’s license.
Particulars of the other charge said he drove the vehicle when the insurance was invalid.
Khan was remanded to prison until July 17, when sentencing would be announced.
Taxi driver Levi Seecharran, of Lot 16 Ruimzeight Gardens, West Coast Demerara, died on the spot Tuesday when his vehicle collided with the one Khan was driving.
The canter rammed the side of the Gem Taxi Service motor car Seecharran was driving and he suffered severe head injuries.
According to reports, Khan and the owner of the canter fled the scene after the collision.
However, Khan was persuaded by the wife of the owner to turn himself in to Vreed-en-Hoop Police, also on West Coast Demerara, where the man who owns the vehicle also gave himself up.
Seecharran leaves to mourn his wife, Vanita, 23, their nine-month-old son, Justin, and other relatives.
Police had reported that Seecharran was driving HB 5633 in a southerly direction when the crash occurred.
Seecharran was pronounced dead on arrival at the Demerara Regional Hospital.
