ANTHONY ‘Awo’ Abrams is coming under fire from president of the Alpha United Football Club, Presidential Adviser on Empowerment, Odinga Lumumba, for defrauding the club and for playing illegally in Suriname for the Leo Victor Football Club.
Addressing members of the media yesterday at the Waterchris Hotel, Lumumba said Abrams, whom his team acquired from Fruta Conquerors FC three years ago, was not authorised to play for the Surinamese club.
“He even played against Alpha, his home club, in the International Federation of Football Associations’ (FIFA) Inter-Guiana Club Champions Tournament”. Lumumba informed, adding that the FIFA convention and the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) met with the president of the Guyana Football Federation, Colin Klass, and the striker was suspended until there is a resolution, but he is at present still in action in the neighbouring territory (Suriname) and as such, Lumumba said the GFF and Alpha United are to meet to discuss the situation.
Lumumba related that Abrams presented a letter from the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) stating that he was released to play for Leo Victor. However it was later discovered that the document was forged as GFF president Colin Klass knew nothing about it.
“Furthermore, criminal action will be taken against him for fraud, as he collected money from the club then went to play elsewhere,” Lumumba declared.
The Alpha United president is seeking the sum of US$100 000 from the Suriname Football Federation and the Leo Victor FC as restitution.
Furthermore, it was stated that if the matter is not a resolved then it will go to arbitration.
“I think he should be suspended for a considerable time and the Suriname Football Federation and the Leo Victor Football Club should pay adequate compensation,” Lumumba stated.
He (Lumumba) believes that although Abrams is an important player, he must be penalised.
