THE Government of Guyana, in a statement yesterday, said it strongly condemns the military coup of Honduras, which deposed democratically- elected President, Jose Manuel Zelaya Rosales.

The release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said government also joins the call for his early reinstatement as President of his country.
The statement pointed out that, in accordance with the principles of democracy and the tenets of the Inter-American Democratic Charter, the Government of Guyana is concerned with the breakdown of constitutional order in Honduras as a result of the coup d’état.
“The government is also concerned that the events in Honduras may jeopardise the democratic political institutional process and the legitimate exercise of power,” the release stated.
It said, too, that Guyana joins in the condemnation of all acts of violence and the detention of government ministers in Honduras and urged their early release.
“The Government of Guyana supports the convening of a Special Session of the Organisation of American States (OAS) General Assembly today for the purpose of taking appropriate decisions, in accordance with the OAS Charter, international law and the provisions of the Inter-American Democratic Charter,” the document concluded.
