FRUTA Conquerors were conquered 2-1 by Sunburst Camptown when the two teams met in the final of the latter’s Goodwill football tournament at the Camptown ground on Sunday evening.
In the main supporting match, GDF and Bakewell Buxton Stars played to a 1-1 stalemate.
In the feature match, Rishawn Sandiford and Lance Raulston found the back of Fruta Conquerors’ net in the 12th and 30th minutes respectively, while Delon Williams scored for Fruta Conquerors in the 13th minute.
Bakewell Buxton Stars’ Neville Gulliver opened the scoring in the supporting match during the 13th minute while Eusi Phillips found the equaliser for the soldiers in the 18th minute.
The feature match began at a moderate pace on heavy conditions due to overnight and early morning rain and both teams battled for supremacy at midfield. However Camptown were awarded a free kick which was taken by Sandiford from approximately 20 metres out and Sandiford found his target easily.
But one minute later, Williams found the equaliser for Conquerors.
The pace of the game then picked up as both teams attacked each other’s goal area relentlessly in search of the lead but poor finishing from both teams never allowed this to materialise.
Camptown then launched a counter-attack and Raulston received the ball from an aerial pass from his team’s right wing defender Leon Muir and slotted home a shot that had goal written all over it from the time the ball left his boot.
The 2-1 lead before the interval remained unchanged at the end of regulation time, but both goalkeepers were forced to work overtime in order to deny any further goals being scoring.
Camptown’s custodian Richie Richards was forced to deal with a few long range shots while his opposite had to contend with aerial crosses from both flanks.
For winning the four-team tournament, Camptown will receive $80 000, while Fruta Conquerors will be rewarded with $40 000 and GDF $20 000.
Bakewell Buxton Stars were brought into the tournament after BK International Western Tigers opted out of it for reasons unknown to the organisers.
Meanwhile, the executives and members of the Sunburst Camptown team would like to thank Guinness Bar, DeSinco Trading, Excel Mineral, Pro Signs, Western Union and Igloo Ice Cream for supporting the tournament financially.
