RHTWSB retain Busta Champion of Champions Trophy

DEFENDING Champions Rose Hall Town Windies Sports Bar (RHTWSB) retained their Busta Champion of Champions 50-overs first division title, with an emphatic 102-run victory over Rose Hall Community Centre.

Playing yesterday, in the final at the Rose Hall Community Centre ground, in Canje, the visitors produced a high-class performance to make light work of their opponents in a one-sided affair to capture their fifth title in the six-year-old history of the competition, organised by the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club (RHTYSC) and sponsored by the Guyana Beverages Company.

Winning the toss and taking first strike in a match cut short by 10 overs per side as a result of overnight and early morning showers, Rose Hall Town posted a challenging 235 for seven in their allotment of 40 overs before dismissing the home team for 133 in 38.2 overs.

Veteran all-rounder Andre Percival captured three for 21 with his off-spin to undermine the inexperienced Rose Hall Community Centre despite a well-composed 58 from former Guyana Under-15 batsman Sanjay Khan.

Apart from Khan who slammed four fours and a six in his knock, only opener Rocky Bipat with a patient 18 offered minimal support as no other batsman reached double figures on a good batting track.

Assisting Percival was fellow off-spinner Eon Hooper with two for 29. There was a wicket each for pacer Esaun Crandon together with off-spinners Troy Matheson and Kemraj Mahadeo.

Earlier, Rose Hall Town were led to their total, mainly through fine batting from Hooper with an unbeaten 44, Jason Sinclair 42, Renwrick Batson 41, Assad Fudadin 33 and Percival 21 not out.

Hooper, who represented Berbice earlier this year in the GTM Under-19 inter-county tournament, delighted the fair-size crowd with some scintillating hitting towards the end of the innings, smashing five sixes and a four from only 15 balls. He also featured in an unbroken 66-run eight-wicket stand with Andre Percival that lasted just six overs after joining forces in the 34th over with Rose Hall Town on 169 for seven.

Sinclair and Fudadin also posted a brilliant 95 for the third wicket while Batson and Michael Hicks (18) laid the foundation upfront with an opening stand of 63 in 16 overs.

Off-spinner Rumesh Munna took two for 48, medium pacers Rafeek Kassim and Vishal Mohabir two for 60 and 1 for 33 respectively and left-arm spinner Sean Jhetto one for 36, bowling for Rose Hall Community Centre.

Rose Hall Town received the winning trophy and $100 000 for their effort while Rose Hall Community Centre took home a trophy and $50 000.
