CONTINENTAL cyclist Leer Nunes returned one hour 21 minutes 35.30 seconds in winning the P&P Insurance Brokers, Consultancy and Travel Agency feature 35-lap race in the National Park yesterday.

The event, which was organised by national cycle coach Hassan Mohamed saw Nunes take the lead with six laps remaining, after sharing the lead with Junior Niles and Christopher Persaud for more than half of the race before going on to win quite comfortably three of the eight prime prizes that were up for grabs.

Robin Persaud placed second and Niles third.

Niles won two prime prizes while Albert Philander who placed fourth won one.

Amputee Walter Grant-Stuart placed fifth while Persaud finished sixth.

The other two prime prizes were won by Thuran Harris and Warren McKay.

Nunes, who was positioned at the back of the main chasing pack for the first 18 laps, closed in on Niles and Christopher Persaud who were sharing the lead at the time and joined them during the 19th lap.

The trio (Nunes, Persaud and Niles) stuck together for most of the remainder of the race, but during the 29th lap, Niles suffered a puncture and had to get a change of wheel.

This allowed Nunes to attack Persaud and get away and was never caught again.

Philander, Robin Persaud and Grant-Stuart who were approximately 100 metres away, chasing for all they were worth, joined Niles and Christopher Persaud and together they worked in tandem in an effort to connect to Nunes, but to no avail.

Christopher Holder won the juveniles 10-lap event ahead of Kurt LaRose and Leon Haymer respectively.
